The rising momentum behind food prescriptions offers a fresh approach to addressing health concerns. Rather than relying solely on medications, food prescriptions encourage patients to adopt specific diets as part of their treatment plan.
Sifter is the Food as Medicine Platform.

This approach is particularly relevant in combating chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, which are closely linked to diet and lifestyle. And the key is applying the right foods to the right diets. This means training medical professionals and giving them the right tools. That’s where Sifter shines.

Our technology is already being used by healthcare professionals to help evaluate patients, design personalized medical diets, and provide shopping list support at local grocery stores. Now is the time for insurance companies, healthcare organizations, and retail pharmacies to seize the initiative and get ahead of the curve.

The rise of food prescriptions started with produce prescriptions aimed at food insecurity populations. Its expansion has been fueled by growing evidence linking nutrition to long-term health outcomes. As a result, a growing number of healthcare professionals see food prescriptions as part of virtually all comprehensive treatment plans:

- Medically Tailored Meals and Nutrition Services: Several states have received approval from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to include nutrition services in their Medicaid programs. For instance, CMS approved Hawaii's 1115 demonstration waiver in January 2025, allowing coverage for services like nutrition counseling, home-delivered meals, and medically tailored meals for eligible Medicaid members.

- "Food is Medicine" Pilot Programs: Some states are exploring pilot programs to assess the impact of providing medically tailored meals and other nutrition interventions. Florida's proposed "Food is Medicine Pilot Program" aims to offer Medicaid coverage for prescribed health-promoting foods to beneficiaries with specific diet-related diseases or chronic conditions.

- Federal Initiatives: At the federal level, the introduction of bills like the "FOOD for Health Act of 2024" demonstrates a growing interest in supporting nutrition interventions. This proposed legislation aims to direct the Secretary of Agriculture to establish a pilot program providing grants to support "Food is Medicine" programs.

While these developments are promising, a nationwide policy to reimburse healthcare providers for general food prescriptions under Medicare and Medicaid has not been established. Yet. The integration of food-based interventions into healthcare remains an evolving area, with ongoing pilot programs and legislative efforts aimed at expanding coverage and understanding the impact of such services on health outcomes.
